The Philadelphia Eagles selected wide receiver Jalen Raegor with the 21st pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

Much has been said of the decision – mainly negative – but Raegor will join the Eagles and have an immediate role to play.

Analysts have alluded to Philadelphia’s decision not to draft Justin Jefferson. Jefferson, who played his college football at LSU, was an option when the Eagles were on the clock.

Regardless of who Philadelphia chose, a big gap in the offence needed to be filled. This Eagles team was extremely unfortunate with injuries last season, especially the receiving corps which seemed to change with each game.

DeShaun Jackson missed the majority of the season alongside Alshon Jeffery. JJ Arcega-Whiteside never really got going, while Greg Ward Jr. was one of very few bright spots.

The Eagles have been busy over the off-season in trying to add receiving talent. Some of the aforementioned players will return from injury, but the offensive unit at Lincoln Financial Field is definitely going to look very different in 2020.

From the chart below you can see Philadelphia’s struggles. Players included had a minimum of 50 receptions and the colours represent the rest of the NFC East division.

The Eagles did not have a single wide receiver in the chart. Only the tight end duo of Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert sported the Philadelphia green.

Compare this to the Cowboys – Philadelphia’s main threat in the division – who had Michael Gallup, Amari Cooper and Randall Cobb all producing at a good level.

Gallup, despite an injury setback, put together a nice season lining up with Amari Cooper who had moments of brilliance. Dallas also added Ceedee Lamb from the draft which many believe to be an excellent pick up.

Seeing the superior receiving strength in the NFC, Philadelphia had to invest and they have done just that. They have brought in Marquise Goodwin from the 49ers, and also drafted John Hightower out of Boise State in the fifth-round.

Hightower is an interesting player. He stands at 6ft 2 and has some dangerous speed. The Eagles needed some explosive athleticism from their wide outs and they seem to have just that in John Hightower. Philadelphia also selected Quez Watkins in the preceding round to add more depth to this receiving group.

The Eagles backroom staff needed to make some moves and they have been busy. Carson Wentz has a nice variety of weapons at his disposal. Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert remain as one of the elite tight end pairings in the league, and the draft provided some exciting young prospects who will have a role to play whenever the season starts.

For Philadelphia, they have lacked consistency since their Super Bowl win over the Patriots. The offence has been thwarted with injuries, but the management team have been focused on ensuring this offensive group is well-balanced and quarterback Carson Wentz has the tools he needs to succeed once again.

The NFC East may not possess the same talent compared to previous years, but the battle for the top between Philadelphia and Dallas will certainly be something to watch.
